Remake closure is a shock to our movement: our statement
Remake Closure is a shock to our movement
The news of Remake closing down its operations globally has been a huge shock to the wider movement for justice in the garment industry.
Through Remake a community of thousands of activists found each other and used their collective power to demand change. It is vital that this movement building continues.
We send solidarity and thanks to all Remake staff members who have lost their jobs.
We send solidarity and thanks to all Remake Ambassadors, supporters and activists – know your efforts have made a huge difference and know you will keep making change.
We send solidarity and thanks to Remake founders for bringing so many people together. This is a legacy worth celebrating.
This is not a story to be seen out of context – civic space is shrinking, and organisations with a strong mission for change are struggling globally. Our own network within the Clean Clothes Campaign is struggling with reduced funding options. And, of course, the most vital work – that of trade unions on the ground organising garment workers continues to be criminalised, repressed and vilified.
This is a moment for all of us to respond with determination and vision. We are determined to keep building the global movement for justice in the industry. We are determined to offer solidarity and support to worker organisers and trade unions on the ground. We are determined to put pressure on brands and demand a different industry.
It’s time to see determination from funders, from institutions and bodies with power and influence who want to see an ethical industry in which workers’ rights thrive.
To you we say: support this movement. It’s time to ramp up collaboration and resource sharing within the labour movement. It’s time to prioritise protecting the work of organisers on the ground with whatever support we have. It’s time to show there are many more of us who see a different future and are determined to work towards it whatever it takes.
